4th Inning:
St. Benedict - runners on 1st and 2nd after error and a miss played bunt; 2 outs now, still runners on 1st and 2nd. Leech gets a strikeout for the 3rd out.
GPS - Hammond beats out the throw to 1st on a bunt, Baird walks. 1st and second no outs, Givens fly out, bot runners advance. 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. Friday, May 22

St. Benedict Forces GPS To A Second Game.

St. Benedict got off to an early lead by scoring 4 runs in the 2nd inning. The Bruisers answered back in the 3rd inning. Tory Lewis hit a single and then stole 2nd. Whitney Hammond followed with a double to into left field bringing Lewis in for the Bruisers first run. Jackie Baird hit a single to center field and Hammond scored run number two.

In the 5th inning, Lewis again hit a single to left field. Hammond hit a single to center field. Lewis scored again off of a single hit to center field by Jackie Baird bringing the score to 4-3 favor of St. Benedict.

St. Benedict was not able to score again due to some good defense by the Bruisers and several strike-outs by Payton Leech. Unfortunately the Bruisers didn't score again either.

The final game to determine the State Champions will be played tomorrow at 11:00 AM Central.

Sarah Evans advances to final by winning in straight sets (6-0, 7-6).

Bronte Goodhue played a tough match; winning the first set 6-2, but follows with losses in the next two sets (6-2, 6-1).

Softball Moves Into to Winner's Bracket Final


Morgan Lane was 3-3 and had her first career homerun to lead the Bruiser's past St. Benedict on Thursday. Leading 3-2, the Bruisers broke the game open in the 5th inning with 4 runs to take the 7-2 lead.

Lane had 2 runs and 2 RBI. Whitney Hammond was also 3-3 with 2 runs scored. Tory Lewis was 2-3 with a run scored, and Jackie Baird, Payton Leech and Madison Boyd had one RBI each.

Evans & Goodhue Advance To Semifinals


Sarah Evans and Bronte Goodhue advance to the Singles Tennis Semifinals. Evans won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Bronte Goodhue also won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

In doubles tennis, the team of Meredith Morrow & Ann Elizabeth Holley was defeated by the Hutchison team of Maggie Leavell and Maggie Donoghue in two straight sets(6-3, 6-2) and were eliminated from competition.

Freshman Busby Wins Shot Put State Title; Runners Close Out State Meet


On her third throw of the day, GPS freshman Simone Busby threw a personal best 35' 9.5" to win the Division II Shot Put State Championship. Busby's winning throw was 1' 2.75" further than her next best throw.

For the day, GPS won three State Championships.

Parman Throws Birthday Bash, Morrison Along for the Party

Heather Parman celebrated her birthday in fine fashion, throwing a personal best 114' 2" to win the Division II Discus State Championship. Gwyne Morrison joined in on the celebration, throwing personal bests on 3 of her 4 throws. Her longest mark of 102' 5" earned her a 3rd place medal.

Brown Wins State Triple Jump; Kemp 4th, Wilson 7th


Jasmine Brown jumped a personal best 36' 6.5" on her first jump of the day to win the Division II Triple Jump State Championship. Freshman Tory Kemp also set a PR jumping 35' 6.75", good enough for 4th place. Julianne Wilson's top mark of 34' 1.75" placed her 7th.

Wednesday, May 20

GPS Blanks Baylor for Softball Win


Peyton Leech struck out 5 and gave up only 2 hits in leading the Bruisers to a 5-0 opening round victory over rival Baylor on Tuesday night.

Leech started the game with a strikeout and retired the first 9 batters she faced. GPS got on the board in the bottom of the first when Tory Lewis scored from second on a base hit by Megan Givens.

In the third, Lewis reached on a bunt, then stole second. Whitney Hammond's single advanced Lewis to third, bringing Jackie Baird to the plate. Baird's single scored Lewis from 3rd, and the speedy Hammond from first giving GPS a 3-0 lead.

Baylor got its first hit in the top of the fourth on a Nina Davenport single, but the next 3 at-bats led to outs and left the score at 3-0.
In the fifth, Leech helped her own cause with a ground-rule double that one-hopped the fence, scoring Givens for the 4th Bruiser run of the game. GPS added one more run in the 6th on a scarifice fly by Madison Boyd, scoring Maddie Smith for the 5th and final run.
After the first batter grounded out, Leech gave up the second Baylor hit of the game in the 7th. But Baylor couldn't put anything together beyond that, following it with a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
GPS moves on to the winner's bracket final, where they will face the winner of today's Father Ryan / St. Benedict matchup. The winner's bracket final will be played Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CST.

Tuesday, May 19

Tennis Title Streak Comes to an End


After winning 3 straight Division II State Tennis Championships, GPS saw its streak come to a close in a semifinal loss to Hutchison (Memphis).

Sarah Evans led the Bruisers as she had all year, winning her match 6-3, 6-3. Meredith Morrow, Lauren Schlabach and Bronte Goodhue each fell in 2-set matches. That meant Ann Elizabeth Holley must win her match to force doubles and keep the Bruisers' hopes alive. Holley had jumped out to a 6-4 win in the first set, but narrowly lost the second 7-6. In the deciding third set, Holley led 2-1 but couldn't hold on for the win, eventually falling 6-3.

Brown, Kemp Post Strong Performances in State Pentathlon



Senior Jasmine Brown and Freshman Tory Kemp improved on their Region Meet performances to finish 2nd and 6th out of 12 athletes at the Division II State Pentathlon in Murfreesboro.

Brown, who finished 3rd in last year's Pentathlon, finished with 3,256 points, 150 points higher than her score at last week's region meet. She improved over her region marks in 4 of the 5 events, and equaled the 5th. She was first in the Long Jump with a jump of 17' 4.75", the longest jump of the season for GPS.

Kemp, a freshman participating in her first State Pentathlon, finished with 2,785 points, improving on her region score by 50 points. She improved over her region marks in 3 of the 5 events, and moved to 6th place after qualifying for the meet with the 7th best score.
